Drinking Water in the NWT

Boil Water Advisories

A boil water advisory is an advisory to the public that all water used for drinking should be boiled for 1 minute.  This includes all water used for making infant formula, juices, washing and rinsing vegetables, brushing your teeth, and washing your hands.

How should tap water be boiled properly?

  • Water should be placed in heat-resistant container or in electric kettle without an automatic shut-off.
  • Bring to a rolling boil for 1 minute to kill all disease-causing microorganisms.
  • Cool water and pour into clean container or refrigerate until you are ready to use.

*rolling boil – a state of continuous rapid boiling that does not stop or slow when stirred.
