Sport and Recreation

MACA is responsible for supporting active living across the Northwest Territories (NWT). This includes developing and maintaining Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) partnerships with territorial sport, recreation and physical activity stakeholders, representing the GNWT on the Multisport Games Committee, and supporting a Team NT for sporting events like the Arctic Winter Games, Canada Games, the North American Indigenous Games, and the Canada 55+ Games.

NWT Active Living Framework

Following engagement with Indigenous governments and organizations, territorial and regional recreation and sport organizations, non-government organizations that support underserved populations, and community active living champions, MACA developed the NWT Active Living Framework 2023-2033. 

The Framework sets out the GNWT’s vision, principles, and goals to promote physical activity, recreation, and sport for NWT residents over the next decade. It centers around themes such as prioritizing Indigenous cultures and practices, celebrating and supporting local champions, investing in the sport, recreation and physical activity sector with sustainable and flexible funding, and improving access and increasing opportunities for participation in sport, recreation and physical activity.

Physical Activity, Sport and Recreation Fund

MACA is responsible for administering the Physical Activity, Sport and Recreation (PASR) Fund. This fund is supported by the Western Canada Lottery Program, which is governed by the Western Canada Lotteries Act. Proceeds from the PASR Fund are distributed to the Indigenous Sports Circle NWT, NWT Recreation and Parks Association, Sport North Federation, and Mackenzie Recreation Association and territorial sport organizations. The Fund also supports Team NT’s participation in Multisport Games.
