Overview

This program provides funding for high performance athletes from the Northwest Territories (NWT) to assist with the costs associated with training and competing in their chosen sport.

Eligible costs include:

  • Sport training including travel and accommodation costs, entry fees and related expenses
  • Coach or trainer expenses
  • Equipment
  • Facility rentals or access fees
  • Living costs while away from their primary residence
  • Special medical, sport medicine or related services not covered by Government of the Northwest Territories Health Care
  • Fees for membership to sport organizations

Available Funding

The funding level for each recipient is based on athletic achievement and recognition at the national or international level:

  1. Gold Level Assistance (up to $20,000)
  2. Silver Level Assistance (up to $10,000)
  3. Bronze Level Assistance (up to $5,000)

Deadline

October 18, 2024

Eligibility

To apply you must:

  • Be a member in good standing with a National Sport Organization or Territorial Sport Organization;
  • Be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant;
  • Be a Northwest Territories resident;
  • Not be employed on a full-time basis (over 20 hours per week); and
  • Not be receiving remuneration from any professional sport league or team
  • Remain at  a southern training location for the duration of the sporting season

Athletes may be eligible to receive support under one of the three categories:

1. Gold Level Assistance (up to $20,000)

  • Athlete is a member of a National Team or a Junior National Team, and is representing Canada on an International basis
  • Athlete may be a carded athlete
  • Application must include a letter of endorsement from an NSO and the athlete’s coach
  • Athlete must provide evidence of a 12-month training program as part of their application for grant funding

2. Silver Level Assistance (up to $10,000)

  • Athlete is a member of a National Team or Junior National Team developmental program
  • Athlete may be a developmental carded athlete
  • Athlete must include a letter of endorsement from an NSO and their coach
  • Athlete must demonstrate a 12-month training program as part of their application for grant funding

3. Bronze Level Assistance (up to $5,000)

  • Athlete is a recognized member of any Usports, CCAA, or NCAA sanctioned team
  • Athlete is a recognized member of any other nationally sanctioned amateur sport league
  • Athlete must have a letter of endorsement from their coach
  • Athlete must demonstrate a 12-month training program as part of their application for grant funding

  3. Submit the application form and required documents to sport_and_recreation@gov.nt.ca before the deadline
