GNWT to Hold Public Consultations on the Volunteer Support Initiative

YELLOWKNIFE (May 11, 2010) –The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is encouraging residents to provide input on the Volunteer Support Initiative (VSI). The VSI represents the newest efforts by the GNWT to help strengthen and support voluntary organizations and volunteers as they continue to develop and maintain sustainable, safe, and vibrant communities. An upcoming series of public consultations are aimed at getting input from NWT residents on how best to build on the program.

“Our government is committed to supporting the work of the people and groups that make our communities better places to live by selflessly giving of their time and effort,” said the Honourable Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA). “I encourage everyone to provide their input as we revise and update the VSI, so that we can continue to develop this very important sector.”

Through both the upcoming public consultations and results obtained during the 2009 Volunteer Summit, the GNWT is updating and revising the VSI so that it will include initiatives to improve training opportunities for volunteers, with a particular emphasis on community capacity building; promoting the social and health benefits of volunteering to all residents; engaging NWT youth as new volunteers; and supporting the development of resources to complement these activities.

Community groups, organizations, and individuals who are interested in providing input on what should be included in the VSI are encouraged to click here for more information.

Updating and refocusing the Volunteer Support Initiative is a key part of the Government of the Northwest Territories’ Building our Future initiative, and is an important step to improve support for the voluntary sector.
