NWT Sport Volunteers at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games
YELLOWKNIFE (January 26, 2010) –Three Northwest Territories’ (NWT) residents will do their part to make the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games a success by sharing their expertise as skilled sport volunteers.
Selected by the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) as skilled sport volunteers are:
- Robin Langille, Tulita – Ice resurfacer for the hockey competitions;
- Janie Hobart, Fort Smith – Official for curling; and
- Robin Sproule, Yellowknife – Member of the athlete services team for the hockey competitions.
As part of the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT’s) commitment to develop sport in the NWT, the Honourable Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), announced that travel support is provided to each skilled sport volunteer to help offset the costs associated with volunteering at the 2010 Winter Games.
“After countless hours of dedicated volunteering in the NWT, our skilled sport volunteers have the opportunity to shine at the International level,” said Minister McLeod. “Not only does our Government recognize the value of volunteering at this event, but also the great opportunity our volunteers have to be ambassadors for the NWT at the 2010 Winter Games.”
“This is the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Mr. Langille who interviewed and trained for his role as an ice resurfacer at the Games. “I am looking forward to being part of the excitement and being there in person to cheer for our athletes.”
Through its investment in the 2010 Winter Games Skilled Sport Volunteer Program, the GNWT is working to build our future by enhancing support of our voluntary sector. Strengthening the voluntary sector supports our goals of healthy educated people and sustainable, vibrant, safe communities as envisioned in the 16th Assembly’s Vision of Northerners Working Together.
