GNWT Launches New Program to Support Recreation and Sport

YELLOWKNIFE (June 14, 2010) – The Government of the Northwest Territories is launching the Regional Youth Sport Events Program, which will provide support to sport and recreation organizations and school authorities to organize and host regional youth sport events.

Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Robert C. McLeod said the intent of the Regional Youth Sport Events Program is to strengthen local programming, support athletes and coaches in smaller communities, and to improve youth participation in physical activity.

“Sporting events provide our youth with opportunities to grow and learn with those who share an interest in being healthy and active,” said Minister McLeod. “Investing in regional sport events is an investment in the Northwest Territories’ future since these events will offer more youth the chance to lay the building blocks for positive healthy lifestyle choices.”

Regional organizations or school authorities are invited to submit applications for up to $50,000 for events that target youth in the NWT under the age of 25 years. The deadline to apply for funding this year is July 9, 2010.
