2007 NWT Get Active Community Challenge
Yellowknife (May 13, 2007) – Today at the Legislative Assembly, the Honourable Michael McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) launched the 2007 Get Active Community Challenge.
Minister McLeod, accompanied by Get Active partners the Honourable Floyd Roland, Minister of Health and Social Services, the Honourable Charles Dent, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, and Lisa McShane, President of the NWT Branch of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, challenged NWT residents to track and log the number of minutes they spend being physically active between now and July 31.
“Everyone can take part in this friendly community challenge to see which NWT community is the most active. If you walk, bike, play sports, chop wood, or go hunting, you are being active,” said Minister McLeod.
The goal this year is to beat the ten million minutes logged last year by 24 NWT communities.
“We had a great turnout last year. We hope the NWT will be even more active this year and use this challenge as a stepping stone to a healthier lifestyle,” said Minister Roland.
“The Get Active campaign is a way for communities to come together. Last year’s winners, Hay River, Colville Lake, Tulita and Fort Good Hope, all showed how successful events like this can be when a community comes together,” said Minister Dent.
Other NWT communities are holding their own launch events. Ulukhaktok is holding a walk/bike-a-thon today, Fort Simpson will hold a bike rodeo tomorrow and Sir Alexander Mackenzie School in Inuvik has a whole series of events planned for the last week of May.
