National Emergency Preparedness Week is May 2nd to 8th

YELLOWKNIFE (May 3, 2010) – The Government of the Northwest Territories is promoting the importance of planning and preparation by recognizing National Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) this May 2nd to 8th. Held annually across Canada, EP Week was created to remind Canadians of the importance of being adequately equipped for emergencies.

During EP Week, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Robert C. McLeod is encouraging all NWT residents to ensure they have an up-to-date emergency kit and plan and are aware of the emergency risks in their region.

“Residents can greatly reduce the impact of disasters by being prepared to support themselves at home for 72 hours,” said Minister McLeod. “Whether it’s a flood, forest fire, or major storm, residents should learn what to do in each situation and have enough supplies on hand in case emergency workers can’t help them right away.”

Basic emergency kit requirements are common items that are easily found around the home like water, food, flashlight, and a first-aid kit. The key to a successful emergency kit is making sure that all the items are organized together and easy to carry in case you need to evacuate your home.
