Call for Applications for “Active After School” Funding
YELLOWKNIFE (September 1, 2010) – Schools and community groups are invited to apply for funding to run “physically active after school” programs during the coming school year.
Through the Active After School Funding, the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) and the NWT Sport and Recreation Council provide direct financial support to schools and community groups to get kids moving after school.
“The most inactive time for youth is the after-school period from 3:30 to 6:00 P.M.,” said Robert C. McLeod, Minister of MACA. “By creating more opportunities for children to be active during this period, we aim to significantly increase overall physical activity levels.”
“This funding is another step towards our long-term goal that sees kids automatically choosing to move after school instead of selecting less active pursuits,” said Bridget Larocque, Chairperson of the NWT Sport and Recreation Council. “It is our hope that, given an exciting alternative, more kids will discover the joy of physical activity.”
In order to qualify for the funding, schools and community groups must demonstrate they are providing activities that appeal to inactive or underactive youth, and ensure that the youth are active for a minimum of 40 out of every 60 minutes.
The deadline to apply for funding is October 15, 2010. Click here for an application form and eligibility guidelines.
The NWT Sport and Recreation Council provides leadership and support to the sport and recreation sector in the NWT, and its vision is the establishment of a culture of physical activity throughout the Northwest Territories.
The Government of the Northwest Territories is working to build our future by promoting healthy and active living among children and youth. Improving the physical and mental well-being of our youth will create healthy, educated Northerners as envisioned in the 16th Assembly’s Vision of Northerners Working Together.
