Outstanding Volunteers Honoured

YELLOWKNIFE (May 10, 2010) – The recipients of the 2010 Outstanding Volunteer Awards will be honoured at an award ceremony in Hay River on Friday, May 14, 2010.

The Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), the Honourable Robert C. McLeod, says the annual awards are a great opportunity to acknowledge the volunteers and voluntary organizations that strengthen our communities with their outstanding contributions.

“The award recipients have continually devoted their time to making our communities better places,” said Minister McLeod. “From developing the Food Rescue Program to providing 24 hour support to victims of crime, they are a credit to their communities and an example to all Northerners.”

Recipients of the NWT Outstanding Volunteer Awards for 2010 are:

  • Outstanding Elder Award – Ruby Trudel, Yellowknife
  • Outstanding Youth Award – Bryan Nitsiza, Whati
  • Outstanding Individual Award – Cheryl Hval, Fort Smith
  • Outstanding Group Award – Victim Services Volunteers, Yellowknife

The GNWT presents the Outstanding Volunteer Awards annually to individuals and groups who have helped improve the quality of life in the NWT through their work as volunteers. Click here for more information on the Outstanding Volunteer Awards Program.

Recognizing outstanding NWT volunteers is an important part of the Government of the Northwest Territories’ Building our Future initiative, which aims in part to improve support to the voluntary sector. Strengthening the voluntary sector will work to support our goals of healthy educated people and sustainable, vibrant, safe communities as envisioned in the 16th Assembly’s Vision of Northerners Working Together.
