International Youth Day 2009
Yellowknife (August 12, 2009) - Today is International Youth Day with the theme: Sustainability: Our Challenge. Our Future.
In the Northwest Territories, Minister Responsible for Youth Robert C. McLeod says it is important that today’s youth take an active interest and get involved in their community.
“You are our greatest and most valued asset,” he said to NWT youth. "Your actions and involvement can make positive and lasting contributions to the Northwest Territories. You can help create the sustainable, vibrant, safe communities that we envision for our future.”
Investment in children and youth is a major component of the Government of the Northwest Territories’ Building Our Future Initiative. Over four million dollars of new funding has been targeted since 2008 to expanding programming for children and youth in support of the 16th Assembly’s goal of “healthy educated people.”
The United Nations declared August 12 International Youth Day in 1999 to help focus attention on the needs of young people and recognize their contributions to society.
The Minister also encourages NWT leaders to take the time to support and provide strong mentorship for NWT youth.
