2008 Get Winter Active Wraps Up
(Yellowknife, May 1, 2008) Cold temperatures and short days did not prevent NWT residents from getting active this winter. Today, the Honourable Michael McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Communities Affairs announced the results of the 2008 Get Winter Active campaign.
“Everyone should lead an active life. With Get Winter Active, communities led the way, using their knowledge about what motivates residents. Having local community champions on board made the winter campaign a great success,” said Minister McLeod.
Created in 2007, Get Winter Active is designed to encourage communities to organize local events that support youth and their families to be more physically active. This year, Get Winter Active ran from January 14 to March 31, 2008. The purpose of the campaign is to raise general public awareness of the health benefits of being physically active. Community champions volunteered their time to organize activities and to arrange for healthy snacks during events.
In 25 communities, led by 39 champions, approximately 4,000 residents skied, slid, snow-shoed, and played hockey, soccer, volleyball and basketball as part of Get Winter Active 2008. As with past campaigns, schools played a big role in promoting community involvement.
Campaign organizers were pleased to again receive sponsorship from First Air, who donated eight First Air passes as incentive prizes for individual participants and community champions. The following prizewinners each received two flight passes through a ballot draw:
- Allan Browning (Community Champion), Hay River Reserve
- Kelly Allinott, Hay River
- Soloman Crerve, Yellowknife
- Philip Elanik, Aklavik
