The New Deal for NWT Community Governments
April 1, 2007 kicks off an exciting new era in the history of community governments in the Northwest Territories. On that date, implementation of the New Deal for NWT Community Governments will represent a major change in how NWT communities do business.
Beginning in 2007-2008, all NWT communities will assume full authority for decisions about community public infrastructure. MACA is supporting these changes by providing community governments with stable, long-term predictable funding for infrastructure development, training through the Department’s School of Community Government and ongoing advice and assistance.
The New Deal represents the biggest shift in policy in the area of community governance since the GNWT was established in 1967 and set up the first Department of Local Government to establish and support local governing authorities. More importantly, the New Deal is in direct response to community governments’ requests for greater control and local government autonomy.
