Recreation Facility Operator Program
This program is designed to maximize the lifespan of recreation facilities in the NWT by ensuring effective operation, maintenance and management of existing and future facilities through the training of competent recreation facility personnel. The program is based on the occupational standard for recreation facility operators.
What will I learn?
The program provides instruction on key competency areas for recreation facility operators to provide operators with the skills and knowledge to operate and maintain facilities effectively.

Course Descriptions:
Risk Management - 1 Day
Understanding the importance of risk management in the operation and management of facilities. Developing a solid risk management program for facilities.
Operations Management - 3 Days
Instruction in administration and supervisory practices including work/project planning, staff supervision, communications, budgeting and financial management.
Arena Tech Level I
Instruction involving practical sessions in making, marking, painting and maintenance of natural and artificial ice.
Arena Tech Level II
Instruction in advanced refrigeration theory, maintenance and trouble shooting facility operations, staff scheduling, safety and customer service.
Ice Resurfaces
Instruction and practical sessions on ice resurfacer operations and preventative maintenance. Safety, fuel storage procedures and operation of related ice maintenance equipment.
Curling Operations
Curling ice sheet making, marking, painting and maintenance Also instruction in ice equipment operations and maintenance, stone care.
Pool Operation Level I
Instruction and practical sessions in swimming pool operations. Topics include water circulation/filtration, disinfection and water balancing.
Pool Operation Level II
Advanced principles in swimming pool operations. Topics include water circulating/filtration, advanced water chemistry and water balancing, hot water pools, trouble shooting and pool regulations.
Parks and Sports Fields Level I
Instruction in playspace planning, design considerations, material selection. Also includes instruction in maintenance of playgrounds, sportsfields and parks as well as equipment operations and safety.
Parks and Sports Fields Level II
Instruction in horticulture, landscaping principles, turf management and maintenance, weed control, tree planting. Also instruction on planning and design of outdoor courts and skate parks.
Recreation facility operators are also encouraged to attend courses offered within the Works and Works Management Program of the School of Community Government including:
- Custodial Care-3 Days
- Basic Trade Skills I (Carpentry, Painting and Drywall)- 6 Days
- Basic Trade Skills II (Plumbing and Electrical)-6 Days
- Heating and Ventilation-8 Days
- Building Operations-10 Days
- Energy Management-3 Days
- Site and Structural Maintenance-3 Days
- Preventative Maintenance Planning-3 Days
