Community Capacity Building Fund

About the Community Capacity Building Fund

The Community Capacity Building Fund is a one-time $35 million fund made available by the Government of Canada under the Northern Strategy.  The fund supports collaboration by bringing community organizations together to decide on projects that will benefit all residents.  To date, funds have been distributed to all 33 communities in the Northwest Territories, supporting over 230 projects.

Applications received included a number of community capacity building initiatives:

  • expansion of community complexes or hamlet offices to include additional services and infrastructure support for various community groups;
  • investment in housing projects for seniors, staff and community;
  • development of new or enhanced community facilities (i.e. community workshop, commercial cooking facility, sawmill, cultural and traditional knowledge centres, youth centre, etc.);
  • training and succession planning;
  • infrastructure enhancements, (i.e. comprehensive community plan development and feasibility studies, hydro projects and communication systems up-grades).

Communities have until September 30, 2008 to provide Municipal and Community Affairs a detailed report of what was accomplished including copies of available plans, reports, photographs and other relevant documentation.
