Recreation Facility Operator becomes a Designated Occupation

The position of Recreation Facility Operator has been approved by the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) and the Apprenticeship Trades and Occupational Certification Board and has been added to the list of designated community government occupations.

The Recreation Facility Operator occupation consists of three specilizations: Skating Rinks, Curling Rinks and Aquatic Facilities. Candidates can choose to become certified in one or more specializations, provided they meet the eligibility requirements for that occupation. Certification includes a Skills Assessment, Work Exerpience, Written Exam, Practical Exercise and an Assesment of Professionalism.

The first three candidates awarded certification as Recreation Facility Operators are:

  • Shane Thompson, MACA Deh Cho Region, Aquatic Facilities, Skating Rinks and Curling Rinks;
  • Johanna Elliot, City of Yellowknife, Aquatic Facilities;  and
  • John Campbell, City of Yellowknife, Skating Rinks.

There are now nine community government occupations that have been designated:

  • Senior Administrative Officer
  • First Nation Administrator
  • Finance Officer
  • Community Works Foreman
  • Housing Manager
  • Tenant Relations Officer
  • Assistant Housing Manager
  • Recreation Coordinator
  • Recreation Facility Operator
