High Turbidity - On May 19 the Town of Hay River switched its drinking water from the elevated reservoir to the water treatment plant to conserve water for fire emergencies. The source water is Great Slave Lake at the mouth of the Hay River. The raw water had a turbidity around 80 NTU, and the treatment plant could only reduce it to 13 NTU. An engineer will be sent to help optimize the treatment process. The advisory is for precautionary reasons only. No reports of illnesses have been reported to-date associated with consuming drinking water in the community. This advisory is due to muddy water caused by spring break-up. The water treatment plant is unable to keep the turbidity level low enough to ensure adequate disinfection. This is a recurrent seasonal problem in Hay River. |

High Turbidity - due to cloudy water (high turbidity) a result of problems with the treatment plant's water intake which prevents water from being filtered in the treatment plant. The high turbidity could interfere with the ability of chlorine to act as an effective disinfectant to ensure water safety. |
