- Disaster Assistance, in the form of financial reimbursement for eligible expenses, is available to community governments, small businesses, and residents of the Northwest Territories.
- The GNWT Disaster Assistance Policy must be enacted before any claims will be accepted or any payments made.
- Disaster Assistance is limited to restoring essential items to a habitable level.
- Disaster Assistance is not insurance.
- Claimants must be able to demonstrate that all appropriate and reasonable measures to prevent and minimize damage were taken to prevent or lessen the effects of the natural disaster or civil emergency.
- Disaster Assistance claims may take up to a year to process, depending upon the severity and the extent of the damage.
- Through the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements, the Government of Canada supports provincial and territorial governments in offering disaster assistance to its citizens who have experienced losses as the result of a disaster.
