Fire Extinguishers for Facilities that Use Chlorine

(FM-062-2005)

In accordance with NFPA 430, BC type fire extinguishers shall be used in areas where chlorine is used because they use sodium bicarbonate, which does not react with chlorine. Water based, "A" type fire extinguishers may also be used.

Fire extinguishers such as the ABC type that use an ammonium based dry chemical or halon shall not be used around chlorine in any form, either as a gas, powder, pellets or liquid. Ammonium compounds react explosibely with oxidizers such as chlorine.
