SEISMIC DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

In accordance with the 1995 National Building Code (NBC) Articles 4.1.9.1,.(15),& (16) and tables 4.1.9.1.D & E, seismic restraint shall be included in buildings designated as post disaster buildings, such as health centres, firehalls, police stations, power plants, fuel facilities and other infrastructure designated as post disaster emergency facilities. Also, in communities where the zonal acceleration (Za) or the zonal velocity (Zv) are greater than 1 and the foundation factor (F) is greater than 1.3, then seismic restraint shall be provided.
If a small building is not within the requirements of Part 4 of the NBC, in accordance with article 2.1.2.1(1), then seismic restraint is not required.
Communities with either a Za or Zv value of 2 are Aklavik, Inuvik, Rae Lakes, Taloyoak, Gjoa Haven, Resolute Bay and Broughton Island. Tsiigehtchic, Ft. McPherson, Pond Inlet and Clyde River have both Za and Zv values greater than or equal to 2. Seismic restraint for non structural building components (mechanical and electrical systems) shall be required in communities where the Za or the Zv values are greater than or equal to 2.
