Fire Marshal Technical Bulletins
Section 126.96.36.199.(3) of the 1995 National Building Code states that the fire resistance rating of a firewall shall be provided by masonry or concrete. However, in the Northwest Territories if is often difficult or cost prohibitive to install concrete or masonry in remote settlements.
Therefore, in remote communities a firewall required to separate a building according to the floor area limits in section 3.2.2, may be constructed of fire resistant type "X" drywall, with the fire resistance rating required. The firewall shall comply with all other requirements for firewalls.
