Lands Administration
ATLAS Mapping Systems
ATLAS is a land information system that uses GIS technology. It was developed through consultation with Northwest Territories communities, community governments, Aboriginal governments as well as other stakeholders. It has been designed with the needs of each of these groups in mind and fills an identified gap in the area of land administration.
Known as Administration of the Territorial Land Acts System (ATLAS), the system provides accurate graphic and written information on each parcel of land within a community's boundary. This supports MACA's vision of providing more autonomy and authority to community governments over the management of land within their boundaries.
The benefits to MACA, community governments, Government of the Northwest Territories departments, and other stakeholders will be substantial. ATLAS can collect, store, retrieve, transform, analyze and display land information. A user of the system is able to see, change, analyze and display land information through maps and reports.
Some of the potential uses of ATLAS are land management, community planning and infrastructure management. Not only is ATLAS a vital tool for MACA, it will assist in land claims negotiations and assist First Nations as they take on responsibility for land administration functions as the authority for lands devolves.
Vision Statement
"ATLAS will provide users with accurate and reliable maps, and written information on every parcel of land within community boundaries. It will be accessible territorial wide anywhere, anytime and will be easy to use."
Our vision is that users will see:
- Improved access to land information;
- More accurate and timely information for improved decision making;
- Elimination of a barrier to Land Administration; and
- Elimination of a barrier to GIS.
In the future, we will acquire more data and develop partnerships with, community governments, other government departments and stakeholders to strengthen the system.
