Lands Program Unit
The Lands Programs Unit:
- Administers Commissioner's land pursuant to the Commissioner's Land Act and Regulations;
- Arranges legal surveys, and maintains aerial and topographic mapping of Commissioner’s public land through a geographical information system; and
- Provides advice and assistance on community land use planning pursuant to the Planning Act.
Lands Programs
The Lands Programs Unit is located in Yellowknife. It develops and manages a number of discreet land management programs, and provides advice and assistance to land administration specialists located in the Department’s network of regional offices.
The Lands Programs Unit is also responsible for addressing the unauthorized use of Commissioner’s public land through the implementation of the Interim Trespass Enforcement Strategy. Any person that is using, occupying, or possessing Commissioner’s public land without the permission of the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs is trespassing. To support and encourage best practices and principles of land management, the Lands Programs Unit arranges and manages legal surveys of Commissioner’s public land. It also arranges for and manages aerial and topographic mapping of each community in the Northwest Territories. This mapping is available to the public and can be accessed through the Department’s Geographic Information System. This system is called ATLAS, and provides graphic and textual information about parcels of land located within the boundaries of Community Governments.
