In 2005, the Government of the Northwest Territories’ Volunteer Declaration and Volunteer Support Initiative (VSI) was developed to recognize the important role that volunteers play in developing communities in the Northwest Territories. The VSI outlines the GNWT’s vision and guiding principles for volunteers in the NWT, and includes four major goals and objectives.
The VSI is now being updated to better support the voluntary sector in the NWT. The updated and revised VSI will focus on initiatives that improve training opportunities for volunteers, with a particular emphasis on:
- Community capacity building;
- Promoting the social and health benefits of volunteering to all residents;
- Engaging NWT youth as new volunteers; and
- Supporting the development of resources to complement these activities.
