Geographic Name - The official name of a community. Former name or proposed geographic name in parenthesis ( ). All corporations/groups indexed under geographic name. Geographic name may/may not be included in corporate name.
Regions - per the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA). Community distribution may differ from one department to another.
Tax-Based municipal corporations include Cities, Towns and Villages.
Non tax-based municipal corporations include Hamlets and Charter
Communities (combination of First Nation/public body). Option to become
tax-based. Settlements include Settlement Corporations and Settlements
(name and boundary only). Non-tax based. Limited governing authorities.
Different names - Not all geographic names are included in the community government and/or First Nation's name. Not all heads of council are called Mayors or Chiefs. Exceptions: Deline Charter Community/First Nation Wha Ti Charter Community/First Nation.
First Nation(s) - Commonly accepted name replacing Indian/Dene Bands.
Name of First Nation - Often has the traditional Aboriginal name.
Name of
Head of Council - Check listing.
Designated Authorities - Not all First
Nations provide municipal services. Term "First Nation - Designated
Authority" describes a First Nation that contracts with MACA to
provide municipal services.
Indian Reserve - established by Federal Order
in Council, under the authority of the Indian Act.
Metis - Some communities have more than one Metis group representing different membership. Metis groups in active self-government negotiations as regional or single entity.
Regional/Territorial organizations are indexed under the community in which their headquarters are located.
