Community Airports Training Program

What is the purpose of the program?

To Train Community Government Staff in the Occupations Dedicated To Community Airports Management and Maintenance.

What are the objectives of the program?

  • To provide community government employees with the skills to provide a safe, dependable and cost effective airport operations
  • To ensure that the community government is safely providing a safe runway service to its residents.
  • To allow community employees to do their job safely
  • To enhance the overall skills of community airport  employees so that they can more effectively contribute to the community

Why should I take the Community Airports Training program?

  • Upon completion of the Management or Maintenance Courses you will have the capacity to serve your community in many of the essential operations of community airports such as Management or Maintenance of Airport Facilities

    What do participants receive upon completion?

    • Participants recieve a certificate of completion from the GNWT for each course completed 

    When and Where?

    • Training courses are scheduled for June, November, and February
    • Training Courses will be delivered throughout the Northwest Territories in both regional and community settings.
    • A Bulletin advertising S of CG training opportunities, registration details, schedules, dates and locations will be regularly distributed to community staff, organizations and partners that support community governments.

    Courses Available

    Community Airport Management

    Course Description:

    Ten days in duration, this course is designed to help Senior Administrative Officers, Private Contractors and Community and Band Managers better understand their roles and responsibilities in the supervision of community airports. Topic cover in the course include Airport Regulations,daily inspections, budgeting, monthly invoices ,safety and security, airside vehicle operators permit , radiotelephone operators restricted certificate problem solving, accident / incident reporting, and DOT & Airports Division Service Contracts.

    Community Airport Summer Maintenance

    Course Description:

    Ten days in duration, the course is designed for community government staff or private contractors responsible for the maintenance of community airport facilities. Better understand their roles and responsibilities in the maintenance of community airports. Topic cover in the course include airport regulations,daily inspections, airfield markers and lighting maintenance , equipment operations and maintenance, safety and security procedures , building maintenance, runway surface maintenance, accident / incident reporting and three days of practical training on the runway including airside vehicle operators permit , radiotelephone operators restricted certification.

    Community Airport Winter Maintenance

    Course Description:

    The course is designed for community government staff or private contractors responsible for the maintenance of community airport facilities. Better understand their roles and responsibilities in the maintenance of community airports. Topics covered in the course include airport regulations, daily inspections, snow removal procedures, airfield markers and lighting maintenance, equipment operations and maintenance, safety and security procedures, building maintenance, runway surface maintenance, accident/incident reporting, airside vehicle operators permit, radiotelephone operators restricted certification and three days of practical training on the runway.

    On-site Training

    Course Description:

    On-site training is designed to provide one on one training to the Community Airport Maintainer in areas of deficiency including equipment operation, runway inspections, airport maintenance or any other area identified.
