The Honourable Caroline Cochrane, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Government of the Northwest Territories
Caroline Cochrane was first elected to the 18th Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in November 2015 representing the constituency of Range Lake. At this time she was also elected as a member of cabinet and holds the positions of Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Minister Responsible for the Northwest Territories Housing Corporation, and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.
Ms. Cochrane’s family moved to Yellowknife in 1963. Her parents had 8 children and her father (Stan) owned/operated Titan Drilling, a mineral exploration company from the late 1960’s to mid-1980’s. This provided her with an understanding of the reliance families and businesses have on the mineral exploration business within the north. She continued to work within the private business field honing her finance and business management skills until the birth of her second child when she returned to university and obtained a degree in Social Work.
Ms. Cochrane spent the last 15 years administering non-profit agencies and, in 2012 she became the Chief Executive Officer with the Yellowknife Women’s Society/Centre for Northern Families and continued in this capacity until her election.
Prior to being elected, Ms. Cochrane volunteered as the NWT representative and Coordinator for the National No-body’s Perfect Parenting Program. Previously, she sat as the NWT representative on the National Child Care Advocacy Association of Canada for a two year term, the Student Assistance Appeal Board for a two year term, and the Social Assistance Appeal Board for a three year term.
Ms. Cochrane and her partner, Rory, have a blended family of adult children and a grandchild on the way. They look forward to their future generations enjoying the benefits the north has provided to them both. She is excited to be able to work towards ensuring a healthy, prosperous, sustainable future for the generations to come.
